Lahaina Arts Association (LAA) has been at the center of a thriving arts community on Maui for 44 years. LAA was established by artists as a 501(c)3 charity through the Lahaina Arts Society and has been an incubator for rising local talent, with its famed Courthouse and Old Jail Galleries and Banyan Tree Art Fairs in Lahaina. As part of its community base, LAA provides ongoing art programs throughout our island community for disadvantaged children and a juried art scholarship program for high school students. Approximately 6,000 children participate each year in our free classes. Proceeds from last year's Photo Maui exhibition raised enough to pay for supplies for two months of classes and 1,000 of our island children. Our goal for 2011 is to double those numbers. Photography has not had a unified showcase on Maui until five years ago when Lahaina Arts Society started "Photo Maui," a juried exhibition for Maui photographers, as a fund raising event for LAA.
Participation in this event has grown each year, with the broadening of photography through digital imaging.
